De:Struct

De:Struct is a piece made specifically for the 2019 Gertrude Street Projection Festival. This video is a demonstration of what is happening behind the scenes of that project. I originally created a miniature Gertrude Street to demonstrate how my piece would look projected. I then made that demo into the actual projected work by hiding the buildings but still allowing the gold chunks to interact with the world model.

“Dismantlement is the central concept that inspires Matt Daly’s work. De:struct is an expression of the narrative surrounding institutional change by way of dismantling imposed structures. For better or worse, what remains will always serve as the foundation for what is to come. This process is cyclical and each time it occurs, history is made. It layers on what came before it and sets the direction for what is to come.”

Expremen

Experimenting with in-editor Vjing, testing a messing around with content ideas for the Apple Music x Laneway Festival collab I did a while back. There are some glitches and effects you can only get inside the Unity3D editor

Chiinn Djinn

A sample of the video I made for the restaurant Chin Chin, they curate an art wall in which they project artist work to be displayed for restaurant-goers and passers-by.

MATT DALY EXPLAINS, “WITH THIS PIECE, MY INITIAL CONCEPT WAS TO CREATE A SURREAL LANDSCAPE TO TRANSPORT THE GUESTS OF CHIN CHIN TO ANOTHER WORLD, ENCAPSULATING THE ENERGY OF THE RESTAURANT WITH MOMENTS OF INTENSITY AS THEY DINE. THE MAIN GOAL I HAD WAS TO REPRESENT THE DISTINCT CHARACTERISTICS OF THE VENUE AND THE WALL ON WHICH THE WORK IS DISPLAYED WITHIN THE WORLD I CREATED. FIRST WAS TO HARNESS THE URBAN FEEL THE WALL AND CHIN CHIN HOLD, GIVEN THEIR LOCATION IN THE HEART OF THE CBD, THE LARGE STATIC BLOCKS CHANNEL THE MONOLITHIC FORM OF THE SURROUNDING BUILDINGS LOOMING ABOVE. THE RUINS IN MY SCENE REPRESENT A LOST CITY FROM THE PAST, SOMETHING THAT THE HERITAGE-LISTED WALL SHARES. THE BLUE LINE STRUCTURES REPRESENT THE NEW, TECHNOLOGICALLY-FOCUSED ADVANCEMENTS IN THE CITY, WITH MOST BUILDINGS COVERED IN ANTENNAS AND RECEIVERS. WITH THE CURRENT CHANGE FROM WINTER TO SUMMER, WE’RE STARTING TO SEE BEAUTIFUL, LIGHT NIGHT SKIES AND RICH ORANGE SUNSETS – I WANTED MY WORLD TO SHARE THIS TOO. THESE IDEAS COMBINED TO CREATE A SURREAL DEPICTION OF MELBOURNE AND THE SPACE THAT SURROUNDS CHIN CHIN.”

Beauty

One of two videos I made for a Botticelli themed event, this video though I decided to give more depth than the other and incorporated a subtle body image narrative.

The Botticelli’s Venus depicting the ideal woman and societal pressures. While Rodin’s Eve as a person with body image issues, shielding themself from cameras and feeling larger than they are.

Music is by Dean Blunt, tracks that were playing in the background when recording the footage
